What is the Immersive Museum?

Experience art with your whole body with immersive images that fill a vast space and powerful sound. Combining special sound effects with immersive images projected on all walls and floors, the world of masterpieces is recreated in a vast space. You can feel the world drawn by Impressionist painters with your whole body beyond sight and hearing. Once you find your favorite position, sit on the cushion and spend a relaxing time floating in the work.

    About the Immersive Museum

    　

    This is a new type of experiential art exhibition that converts world-famous works of art into video content and provides immersive video and a special audio experience that fills the walls and floors of a vast indoor space. We will provide visitors with a new "viewpoint" of art appreciation by providing an "immersive" style from the conventional "appreciation" style. The "Immersive Museum" is a symbol of "Art 2.0" that expands the art experience in Japan by developing new age art content from analog art like conventional museums to cutting-edge digital art. Held in Nihonbashi, Tokyo from July to October 2022, it attracted more than 190,000 people.

    Exhibition features

    　

    In this program, under the supervision of Professor Keiko Sakagami of Waseda University's Faculty of Letters, Arts and Sciences, who is known for his research on Western paintings in the 19th century, we have selected eight Impressionist painters and about 70 works, with a focus on the works of Claude Monet. The group of works that brought about great innovation to the world of painting in France in the 19th century is divided into eight scenes. In addition, we set a theme for each scene, and not only simply visualized the original painting, but also added many original elements to get deeper into the world of the work. "Impression, Sunrise" uses the latest CG technology to fuse the port of Le Havre in France, which Monet would have seen in the 19th century, with an actual painting. The "impressionist technique" allows you to experience as if you were in the process of creating a painting by dividing the vivid paint, which is also a feature of impressionism, and changing the scale. “Monet's series” allows you to experience the transition of time itself by connecting a group of works that capture different moments of the same landscape in succession. Through these various methods, we will create a “perspective change experience” that makes the viewer feel like the painter himself, greatly expanding the Japanese art experience.

    There is a period in history called the "turn of the ages".
    In the 19th century, Paris was undergoing a paradigm shift with various innovations.

    Industrialization brought about new forms of work. Steam locomotives gave people freedom of movement. Some were looking for jobs, some were tourists, some were chasing their dreams, and people flocked to the cities. Due to the rapid population increase, Paris underwent a large-scale urban remodeling, and along with the expansion of roads and squares, cultural facilities such as the Opera House and the Louvre Palace, which have survived to this day, were developed.

    Paris is filled with heat and excitement as the streets and lifestyles of its citizens change day by day.
    Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Degas and other young painters full of ambition and passion met there.

    The evolution of technology opens up new possibilities for art.
    During this period, two important technologies for painting emerged. One is a tube-shaped paint. Unlike conventional pigments, tube paints are highly portable, making it easier for painters to work outdoors. Another is photos. Perspective and other painting techniques for ``recreating reality'' were nowhere near as good as photography.

    The painters who left their studios went out to towns and suburbs, and took up themes that were different from traditional religious paintings, such as new people's lives such as watching opera, and landscapes that changed with the seasons. In addition, instead of mixing paints to create colors, he experimented with a method of expression unique to painting in which vivid colors are produced by placing primary colors on the canvas.
    Through friendly rivalry with his colleagues, he built a new style that faithfully portrays the "moment" of the present in which we live, the "light" and "color" of that moment.

    In any era, it takes time for new values to be accepted by the world.
    At that time, the only way to make a living as a painter was to exhibit at the annual salon and sell your name. However, juries at prestigious salons rejected the new style of painting by the younger generation.

    Believing in the innovation of their paintings, the painters gave up on conservative salons and decided to hold their own exhibitions. This exhibition, later called the "Impressionist Exhibition," was a counter to the existing art world, and at the same time, it was born out of a tense situation in which there were no other options.

    The Impressionist group exhibition will end after a total of eight exhibitions, after many twists and turns, such as the replacement of members and divisions due to differences of opinion. Impressionist painters are called masters today, but for people at the time, they were rebels who greatly shook existing values, a movement of what we now call innovators.

    Immersive art experience

    　

    This exhibition is not just a “visualization of paintings”.
    Giving “time” to Impressionist paintings that capture the light of the moment, changing the “scale” of the distance and size from the viewer, and adding editing and music “context”, he dismantles and reconstructs Impressionism.

    The immersive experience of painting, realized with the latest video technology that controls dozens of projectors, opens the possibilities of art through the evolution of technology, visual expression that expands art, and an alternative exhibition space to existing museums. , restores the spirit of the great Impressionist innovators in a 2020s way.

    What did Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, and Degas see, capture, and express? Try a new art experience that shifts to the painter's point of view instead of "painting vs. yourself".

Kanako Momota
